Get the most out of your new Gmail account.

So you have a shiny new gmail account, how can it change your email experience? If you look past the 2+ gigs of storage, there is a couple options you should look at, Filters and labels. After you have imported you contact list from your other email service you can set up a filter for each contact. This way you can keep all the conversations you have had with a contact together under one label. For example: I belong to the LongLiveTechTv Yahoo Group. I receive several emails each day from this group. I also belong to the Mozilla-FireFox Yahoo Group and also receive several emails from this group. I have setup a filter for each group and when I receive an email from either group, Gmail will send the email to the right place. Then if I want to read all the emails from one of the groups I just select the label for that group. You can setup filters for specific senders, certain words in the subject line -i.e. if there is X word(s) but not X word(s) and if there is an attachment. After you tell the filter what to look for, you can test it to see if it gives you the correct response. If it does, then you can tell the filter what to do with this selected email. Such as send the email straight to archive, place a star on it, put a label on it, forward it to another email address or simply send it to the trash! Then select create filter and from now on every time an email comes to your gmail account the filter will do exactly what you told it to do with the new email, automatically. This way you can stay organized and be able to find a specific email from someone. If you apply a label to the email each email will now display that label in your inbox and there will be box to the left of your inbox with all the labels you have created. If you want to read all the emails from XYZ select the label XYZ and now your inbox will only show the emails for that specific label. Want to find that funny pic someone sent you but don't remember which email it is in? You can use Google to search your emails in your inbox or specific label. Just select the criteria for the search and you find it in a snap!
If do not have an Gmail account there is several invite links on this site. Just do a little search this post.
